Gidget, the Elderly Horse, Finds Joy and Companionship in Her Golden Years
You know, there was this aging horse, Gidget by name, who had been cooped up alone for far too long— imagine not spotting another soul, animal or human, for over ten years. Over 17 years she spent with her owner until age caught up with him and he just couldn’t look after her as she needed. All he could manage was to drop her feed down a chute, and that was pretty much it.
Hope Blooms at Mockingbird Farm Sanctuary for Gidget
That’s when Mockingbird Farm Sanctuary came into the picture. Jonell, who runs the place with a whole lot of kindness, got the heads-up from another rescue group about Gidget, who was knocking on 29 years old and in serious need of a joyful spot to live out her senior days. The moment she stepped into her new home and spotted other animals around, you could see the spark ignite in her eyes. She was absolutely ecstatic to be around other living beings again!
An Unexpected Friendship Forms
Now, you might think Gidget would gravitate toward the other elder horses, but nope, she surprised us all by clicking with a tiny horse named Peggy, who also knew the sting of isolation. Their shared experiences seemed to weave this magical bond between them, and it was like a storybook unfolding right before our eyes. Jonell would say Gidget seemed to ‘purr’ whenever Peggy was nearby—a sound of sheer contentment.
Cherishing Gidget’s Lasting Legacy
It was clear that Gidget’s clock was winding down, and Jonell pulled out all the stops to ensure her days were full of love and joy. Peggy was right by her side, too. There’s this heartwarming video GeoBeats made about Gidget’s journey— gets you right in the feels! Make sure you have some tissues handy when you watch it below!
