Sometimes, when the time is ticking, you have act fast if it’s a matter of life and death. When Bill Morris saw a ‘lifeless’ Yorkie in a hot car, he knew he couldn’t wait for the police to arrive. If any more time passed, the little dog might not have survived.
Being a loyal dog dad himself, Morris knew that no dog should be left in such cruel conditions. So, he grabbed an axe and used it to break the window in a quick rescue. It was a risky mission, but the Yorkie’s life came first in this situation.
What started as a regular errand to buy a vacuum turned into an unexpected pet rescue adventure for Morris. While on his way, Samantha Harvey and her husband, Eddie, flagged him down to alert him of a Yorkshire Terrier in grave danger right before his eyes. A curious crowd had formed, yet no one had stepped up to the task.

The poor pup was in dire straits, lying on its side, breathing heavily and with closed eyes – the situation was desperate. I remember thinking, “This is serious.” Morris didn’t hesitate to pick up his phone and dial the authorities, yet the endless wait on the phone hinted that help wouldn’t arrive in time.
“I saw the dog was so close to death and something within me just snapped into action – I had to do something right then,” Morris reflected on the pivotal moment.
Impelled by urgency, Morris fetched an axe from his own vehicle, with another good Samaritan taking over the police call. Samantha became the impromptu filmmaker, documenting the unfolding drama for posterity.

Determined to save the little dog, Morris delivered blow after blow upon the car window, eight times in all, carefully avoiding potential injury to the dog by aiming for the front window. Once the barrier gave way, he swiftly reached for the dog’s leash, gently navigating the canine out of its perilous confinement. It was Morris’ rapid response that snatched the little Yorkie from the jaws of peril.
Concern for a Canine’s Well-being
When I noticed a dog trapped inside a vehicle, I didn’t hesitate to get the attention of nearby law enforcement for help. To my relief, their immediate priority was the welfare of the dog, and the fact that I had smashed a window to aid the canine seemed to be a non-issue. It was fortunate that the dog was still kicking, so the police officers didn’t waste a moment getting him to a veterinarian. The little guy had been in that overheated environment for over three quarters of an hour and he was due for a grooming — that much I could tell and it probably made the heat worse.
“The officers took down my information but made it clear that I was not in trouble. Not once did they suggest I did something criminal,” I recalled. “Should I ever come across a similar scenario, my actions wouldn’t change. Any regrets? None at all.”

It long after the whole ordeal, the owner of the vehicle showed up with her child in tow. She appeared bewildered but strangely detached concerning the distressed state of her pet. Conversing with her, it turned out she never would’ve considered leaving her daughter in the car like that. Her apology came off as hollow — how could it possibly make up for such neglect?
In a surprising twist, no legal action was taken against the car owner; she was simply let off with a warning. As for me, the public’s gratitude was overwhelming; offers for thank you gifts poured in. Nevertheless, my suggestion was for people to channel their generous spirits toward donations to animal charities. That way, the real winners would be the animals in need.
